Dear Editor,
Small Thing! Big Impact!
A small part of the human body can make a powerful and lasting impact. It can ruin a reputation. It can destroy a friendship, and can cause lasting heartache. On the contrary, it can give praises; it can build up one another, and can make a difference within the lives of many.
At a time when, through the ignorance of some heartless people, many families are grieving because of the loss of loved ones, some of our respectful leaders find comfort in causing verbal insult or injury. At a time when the nation needs to hear more words of comfort, encouragement and commendation from those whom we expect to speak and represent us well, and do so in high esteem, we instead hear derogatory, insulting and offensive remarks aimed at a person performing a voluntary role.
Now, more than ever, we need to hear that our leaders have our best interest at heart, especially when on the verge of the closing of yet another resort where several hundred employees may lose their jobs and have their standard of living reduced. The very last thing that should come from these persons, in high decision-making places, is discriminatory remarks and slanderous comments.
The House of Assembly allows protection via parliamentary privilege. The same should be afforded to calypsonians who, through their art form, are documenting our nation’s cultural history. If you reflect on the calypsos of anyCaribbeannation, you will observe that social issues of the day were skilfully written and artistically rendered in song, by our calysponians.
The Anguilla National Council of Women takes umbrage with the remark, made by the Honourable Parliamentary Secretary responsible for Tourism, concerning one of our ambassadors. We feel a public apology should be made to the volunteer chairperson of the Queens Committee, and to ALL women ofAnguilla.
Had it not been for the voluntary services of the hard workingAnguillawomen, we would not be where we are today.
Reference is made throughout the Bible regarding our attitude and speech, for example: Proverbs 5:1-2, ESV – “My son, be attentive to my wisdom; incline your ear to my understanding, that you may keep discretion, and your lips may guard knowledge.” Ephesians 4:29 – “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” Proverbs 12:18 – “There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”
We urge EVERYONE to use this small part of the body wisely and with great care. Let us make an asserted effort to support one another, – to build up our nation and not to destroy – no matter the political affiliation.
Respectfully
President
Anguilla National Council of Women
