The week-long First Annual Joe Farroba Basketball Camp in Anguilla has ended with a number of presentations to the Anguillian and American coaches as well as the young players from throughout the island.
Camp Director, Joe Farroba, Head Basketball Coach at Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts, showered much praise on Deputy Director of Sports in Anguilla, Rollins Richardson, and owner of JC Recreational Centre, Louis Price, for their assistance with the camp.
Mr.Richardson expressed thanks and appreciation, on behalf of the Anguilla Government and the Department of Sports, to Mr.Farroba and the visiting coaches who joined with the local trainers to make the camp possible. He was delighted that a number of Anguillian youngsters were involved in the event especially at this time when Shara Proctor was Anguilla’s first Olympian, and Zharnel Hughes had recently ranked number three in the 100 meters, and number 4 in the 200 meters, in the world Youth Athletics Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
“I am sure that, going forward, we have a number of youngsters who aspire to do great things for Anguilla and this camp is a step in the right direction,” Mr. Richardson stated. “Mr. Joe Farroba approached us sometime in March this year. We were a bit uncertain how it would turnout, and I believe we all are pleased with where the camp has reached. The coaches paid their own way to Anguilla from the United States, and I hope the local basketballers showed their greatest appreciation and gratitude to them for what they have done for us.”
Addressing the basketball campers, Mr.Farroba said: “Our goal was to give you skills, and a better understanding about the game. For us, as coaches, we just love the game of basketball and it is a way for us to give back. I can’t say enough about Louis Price and Rollins Richardson. Their hospitality has been wonderful. I can’t say enough about the children. Your enthusiasm has been very positive and much appreciated by us. We enjoyed it as much you did. Hopefully, this is the beginning of something positive and we look forward to coming next year to do this again.”
Mr. Price, who gave the vote of thanks, said that a peak number of fifty-seven children had participated in the camp. Among those he thanked were Governor Harrison and Joe Farroba; and coaches: Brian Ferris, Don Bryn, Dave Barrett from the United States and Ian Connor from Anguilla.
Certificates of appreciation were distributed to all the coaches and a number of tokens of gratitude and parting good wishes, such as water bottles and bags, were given to the camps’ participants.
