Young Anguillian athletes DeeAnn Rogers, Theron Niles and Zharnel Hughes represented Anguilla with distinction, as they earned four medals in the recently concluded CAC Junior Athletics Championships. DeeAnn earned a silver medal in one of the most arduous events in track and field, the heptathlon. She competed in the 100m hurdles, 200m dash, 800m, high jump, long jump, shot put and the javelin throw. Her efforts amassed a total of 4126 point, some 239 points behind first place. In doing this, she produced a personal best of 15.5 seconds in the hurdles and 1.58m in the high jump. Her achievement sets the standard for standard for Anguillian heptathlon athletes.
Theron Niles continued to show improvement in his high jump by leaping to a height of 1.85m (6.069 feet), only 5 cm behind first place. His determination earned him a silver medal. His other teammate, Zharnel Hughes, blistered the track in the 100 and 200m heats with times of 10:42 and 21:05 in the semifinals. Following some controversy in the finals, he was adjudged to have placed second in the 100m dash with a time of 10:46 seconds and first in the 200m with a time of 20:98 seconds. He has established new Anguillian track and field records.
The Anguilla Amateur Athletics Federation would like to congratulate the athletes and coaches on their achievements. The Federation would also like to thank Joyce Kentish and Associates, the Anguilla Social Security Board for sponsoring Dee Ann Rogers and Zharnel Hughes respectively.
