The Anguillian
Dear Sir:
SAY NO TO INDEPENDENCE
Once again our Chief Minister is back to his usual topic of independence. However, this time he asked The Father of the Nation, Mr. James Ronald Webster, to make the appeal to the citizens. The Chief Minister knows no one is listening to him, so now here he goes to Mr.Webster hoping that this would lead Anguillians to the “pot of gold.”
I don’t know if persons realized that Mr. Webster spoke before the Hon. Chief Minister who, I must say, was right on point in his response to Mr. Webster’s letter. Obviously it was planned. It was a strategy!!! This was simply a strategy by the Chief Minister to get the citizenry to buy into the whole idea ofIndependence.
The Chief Minister, allegedly, for his own personal agenda, wantsAnguillato go independent, I guess hoping to finally turn “straw into gold”. You know what is quite amusing, is that the Chief Minister wants to get rid of everything British and get rid of the Mother Country. But yet one basic point is that no Anguillians are joining our Police Force. Our regional brothers and sisters are joining the RAPF and there have been, and once again, the crime situation with calls for the British to send in some extra help. So where are we going independent without any proper security force? Chief Minister, please take your head out of the sand.
Next point: we Anguillians love to travel and ourUKpassports are a godsend to us. With this present economy no Anguillian has money to apply for a visa; no Anguillian right now wants to show his or her bank book to theUSconsular officials inBarbadosbecause most Anguillians have depleted their savings! So imagine spending all that money to buy ticket, pay hotel, taxi, food etc. only to get turned down by theUSconsular official inBarbados. What a waste of money that would be. What agony that would be! First of all, it’s depressing in this economy and what would be most agonizing is when vacation time comesto be stuck inAnguillaunable to travel the wider world. I won’t even bother going further to address any other points. Just to say nothing is happening inAnguilla. We have seen the signing of MOUs, yet people are not working. Some persons have not worked for the past two years! Two years!
What are we going independence with? Are we looking to go independent just to appease a few people? To fulfill their narrow agenda? Listen up Anguillians: there is a time for independence, but not right now. Not right now! NO! NO! This is one citizen that won’t be voting ‘yes’ in any referendum if and when the time comes.
Say No toIndependence!
Thank you.
