One of the reading pleasures in Anguilla, including discussions on literary works, can be regularly enjoyed at what is called “De Gazebo West Indian Readers Book Club”, tucked away in a corner of the lush gardens of the Coral Reef Bookstore at Little Harbour.
One of the most recent reading events there was during the period of the Anguilla Lit Fest when a number of leading authors were on the island from theUnited Statesand theCaribbean. On that occasion, a number of book readers and patrons of the bookstore gathered at the gazebo for one of the reading/discussion sessions.
The book which was being read was MAKEDA, written by Randall Robinson, one of the visiting authors whose work is available at the Coral Reef Bookstore. Quotations borrowed from his web page state in part:
“MAKEDA is a universal tale of family, heritage and the ties that bind. It is about the people who help shape and mold us, and lead us in the light. Appealing to the deepest sense of who we are, Robinson plumbs the hearts of Grandmother MAKEDA and her grandson Gray, and summons our collective blood memories, taking the reader on an unforgettable journey of the soul that will linger long after the last page has been turned.”
“MAKEDA is one of Randall Robinson’s best sellers in theUnited States. He is a Professor of Law at Penn State Law School and is the creator, co-producer, and host of the public television human rights series World on Trial. Robinson lives with his wife, Hazel, in St. Kitts.”
