His Excellency The Governor noted that he had said in his own speech, before Mr. Webster’s open letter was read out, that independence could be obtained by a referendum.
Asked to comment on Mr. Webster’s suggestion of an early referendum, The Governor confirmed that it remained the UK Government‘s position that it respected the right of the Anguillian people to self-determination and would therefore respect the result of a properly constituted referendum on independence.
The UK Government‘s more detailed position on these issues for the OTs would be set out in the forthcoming White Paper to be published by the UK Government later this month.
