Olympic And World Champions Participate In The 1st AnnualSt. Martin/ St. Maarten Track Meet
It was an amazing site to see several Olympic Champions all gathered in neighboring St .Martin, ready to participate in the 1st annualSt. Martin/ St. Maarten track meet. Track stars such as Lashawn Merritt, Shawn and Ginnie Crawford,SherianneBrooks, Ainsly Waugh, Shana Cox, Jenna Martin and others made the track and field feast even more enjoyable. The athletes’ performances provided the younger athletes with a live clinic on what proper running technique should look like.
Anguilla’s athletes were just as impressive, leading the way was Zharnel Hughes with a blistering 10:45 seconds in the 100m dash(his time was equal to fourth place for the international males 100m dash). The six foot, three inch sprinter easily defeated second place by some three tenths of a second. Stellar performances also came from Jalique Sasso (55.65 PB), Jahdo Vanterpool and Nicholas Hughes in the 400m. The young middle distance sensation Janique Fleming also showed her true colours by claiming the 1000m title with a time of 3 minutes and 40 seconds (refer to the below table for results).
On Sunday 6th May several athletes and coaches fromAnguillaparticipated in a coaching workshop conducted by Mr. Loren Seagraves of the United Sates. Mr. Seagraves, a coach for the past forty years made an indebt presentation on how to correct a sprinter’s technique so that they can become more efficient. Mr. Zharnel Hughes was one of the persons randomly selected to participate in the demonstration. Mr. Hughes opined the brief session was rather informative and helpful.
