LIME Anguilla joined itsCaribbeancounterparts on Thursday, May 17, in observing World Telecommunications and Information Society Day, commonly known as World Telecoms Day. This was done by recognising three womenon the island who are busily involved in telecommunications.
“Over the years, in different measures, and degrees, LIME has recognised this day because telecommunications is our business,” the company’s Corporate Marketing Manager inAnguilla, Avon Carty, told reporters. “This year, as all of the LIMECaribbean, we are recognising women in our community, following the theme selected for this year’s Telecommunications Day: “Women and Girls in ICT – Information, Communication Technologies.”
Ms. Carty said the observance of the day was to draw attention to the role that women were playing in the society with regards to the advancement and use of Information Communication Technologies.
The three women selected by LIMEAnguillato share how they were using the technologies in their business and personal lives introduced themselves to the reporters. The first was Mrs. Janine Edwards, Co-owner and Director of Administration and Marketing at Sunset Homes. “We do property development and villa rentals,” she stated. “I must say Information Communication Technology has totally revolutionised my life. If I look at my life today, compared to ten years ago, it is a huge difference.
“Especially in my business, I use it 24/7 and people normally accuse me of being on the phone or responding too quickly to emails…but I find that it empowers me to be very efficient. I can perhaps handle 100 matters a day whereas 10 years ago I could only handle 10 aday. With the flexibility and the timeliness of our current level of communication, it is a huge surge in efficiency in terms of business.”
The second selected woman was Ms. Jade Reymond, Retail Sales Associate at LIMEAnguilla. “My business is telecoms and that’s what I sell,” she said.“I am primarily responsible for ensuring that persons, like Janine, and everyone else, are up to date and that I allow them to be as efficient as they can be and our services and products help them to function efficiently.
“The services help me immensely. It is my duty to ensure that I am always up to date with the newest technologies that are available so that I can best meet the needs of our customers for products and services.
“Apart from that, it is extremely strategic that, as a company, LIME stays efficient to assist our customers through the efficient use of Information Communication Technologies.”
The third woman LIME selected was Ms. Carla Harris, Registrar at theAnguillaCommunity College. “InformationTechnology has revolutionised my operations at the college and also my personal life,” she reported. “The major thing I would say is the flexibility it provides. I can work from home. I can work on the road; in another island. You don’t have to be talking to someone who is directly opposite to you in the same time zone. That is really great because we operate with vendors and other institutions outside theCaribbean.
“I love the fact that I can plug in something on my computer. My assistant can do the same; it can be backed up on my phone and I can plan my day. Efficiency and flexibility are huge. There, is of course, the additional element of stress which can be discussed later.”
The interviews and discussions, led by Avon Carty, covered various other related matters.
The event ended with Mrs. Janine Edwards sending a message to the youth: “I encourage you to embrace technology in its most positive way,” she urged. “You can use it to explore the world, to improve your projects, your studies and you can even attend university online. At the same time, use the proper etiquette- things like cyber-bullying, inappropriate communication and other negative things should be avoided.”
