A significant addition to the Clayton J.Lloyd International Airport in Anguilla will be a high level parking ramp for jet aircraft flying in and out of the island.
It is a project of Lloyd’s Aviation Services, the handling company and Fixed Base Operator (FBO) for executive jets landing in Anguilla. The project, on leased Government-owned land, is being constructed north of the middle section of the runway, and west of the Terminal Building.
Mrs. Kelita Lloyd, a Chemical Engineer by profession, but currently Chief Operating Officer with Lloyd’s Aviation Services, told The Anguillian that the facility would provide increased parking space for the jets which, at present, park higher up on a shoulder of the runway.
Mrs. Lloyd revealed that the concrete-surfaced area of the ramp would be 200,000 square feet, with 24,000 square feet of taxiway, and the project will include perimeter fencing, a concrete wall on the George Hill street-side, poles, lighting and gates.
The ground work has been in progress for some time now. The project also involves stripping top soil to remove trees and rubbish, removal of unsuitable fill, compaction and leveling, excavation for light pole bases and drainage, apron perimeter and pole lighting, concrete paving, and other works. The ramp is being designed to parkG 4s and G5 jets and up to 757-300 series aircraft.
In addition to the ramp, next year there will be aTerminalBuildingwhich will provide for such services as immigration, customs and security by airport personnel; as well as private offices and other facilities for Lloyd’s Aviation Services.
The designer is Aveiro Constructors Limited ofOntario,Canada, established in 1976. The company has done work in Anguilla and in several other parts of theCaribbean, erecting steel buildings and undertaking other international and large-scale industrial, commercial and institutional projects.
Lloyd’s Aviation Services already operates a fuel storage and supply facility, in the area, comprising 100,000 gallons of jet A fuel stored in five 20,000-gallon tanks, and one 12,000 gallon tank of Av gas.
When the project is fully completed it will be operated as part of theClaytonJ.LloydInternationalAirportwith all the necessary facilities and services in place.
At a recent meeting of the Anguilla House of Assembly, Chief Minister and Minister of Finance, Hubert Hughes, introduced a motion to provide duty free exemptions to facilitate the project. It received the full approval of the House.
