Turtle nesting season has begun and the Anguilla National Trust’s Anguilla Sea Turtle Conservation Group (ASCG) is looking for volunteers to assist with its beach monitoring programme.
The ASCG is requesting the help of committed individuals who are willing to “adopt a beach” by walking along it during the morning hours, looking for signs of turtle nesting activity. The beaches must be monitored at least once a week, from April through November. The data that is collected will feed into the National Trust’s sea turtle research programme.
A short training session for volunteers will be conducted on how to identify turtle tracks and nests and how to record data. Monthly meetings will also be held in order to discuss findings and possible solutions to help preserve these species.
Beaches that need adopting include: Barnes Bay,Savannah Bay,Crocus Bay,Forest Bay, Maunday’s Bay,Meads Bay,Rendezvous Bay and Sandy Hill Bay.
This is a great way to get some exercise, enjoy the outdoors, and help out in a meaningful way, all at the same time.
Individuals who are interested in taking part in the programme are asked to contact Ms Janeczka Richardson, ASCG Coordinator, at 497 5297 or 729-9443 or to visit the ANT office in The Valley.
