The three day event which was organized and funded by the UPU (Universal Postal Union) Direct Mail Advisory Board with assistance from the CPU (Caribbean Postal Union) attracted Postmasters General, Deputy Postmasters, Operations Managers as well as other Senior Officers with responsibility for the promoting of Direct Mail services in their respective countries.
The workshop was moderated by Mrs. Mary Teahan ofArgentinawho imparted immense knowledge and introduced strategic development plans which reflected her extensive background in Direct Mail/Direct Marketing.
The objectives of the workshop were to:
• Promote the importance of Direct Mail and Direct marketing and develop markets in theCaribbeanregion
• Grow direct mail volumes and increase the participation of designated operators in the market
• Promote value – added direct marketing postal products and services
• Position the Post Office as a direct marketing channel
• Share information to facilitate the growth of direct mail and direct marketing through partnershipsbetween the Post Office and the industry.
Direct Mail can be defined as the use of postal communications as an advertising medium for directly communicating with a consumer or business recipient that is designed to generate a response in the form of an order, a request for further information and or a visit to a store or place of business for purchase of a specific product or service.
Anguilla’s representative to the workshop indicated that Direct Mail is not new to the Anguilla Post Office, as the service is currently being offered though not heavily patronized. Many persons may readily recognize the service by thereceiving of flyers or brochures advertising products and services in theirpost boxes. Mrs. Richardson as well as her colleagues at the local Post Office recognizes the potential benefits which can be derived by businesses through Direct Marketing and is currently putting in place an awareness campaign to sensitize the public to the advantages of this largely unexplored medium of advertising.
TheBarbadosworkshop attracted participants and stakeholders from: Anguilla,Antigua&Barbuda,Barbados,Curacao,Dominica,Grenada,Guyana,Jamaica,St. Lucia, St. Kitts-Nevis,St. Maarten,St. Vincent and the Grenadines,Surinamas well as Trinidad & Tobago.
Anguilla’s representative to the workshop described the event as a very worthwhile and rewarding three day experience which will potentially benefit the local Postal Service and the business community at large.
