Dear Editor:

Last Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 8:45 am, I witnessed a very disturbing thing.  I was driving towards the East and stopped at the red light at Connor’s Corner.  When the light turned green, the car behind me RACED (assuming he put the pedal to the floor) around me on the corner.   Further down the road, the speeding car was slowed by traffic and signaled to turn right (onto the dirt road near Price’s gym).  I stopped behind him. Instead of turning onto the side road, revving his engine again, he spun the car back towards the west, weaving his car almost out of control and into me.  My passenger and I even saw sparks coming from the car.  I was so frightened, and outraged, that I went right to the police and filed a complaint.  The car was going too fast for me to get the license number, but the description of the car was enough that the policeman knew who it was.  I gave the policeman my name and phone number if he needed a witness.

On Sunday morning, I was at Geraud’s Bakery and saw the same car speeding by; going well over the speed limit.  This time I wrote down the license number.   Since it seems the police have done nothing about this, I am calling out to the public to help.   I have done my own investigation and found out that the owner of the car lives in South Hill and is known to be one of the island’s drag racers.  The car is silver, with an open hood.

The driver’s unsafe maneuvers and speeding are illegal but, to make it worse, he did this near a school at 8:45 in the morning!!  Are the police going to wait until this reckless driver runs down a child walking toRoadSchoolto do something???  I know there will be readers out there who know who this is.  We need to come together and prevent a horrible tragedy!!  If you witness this or any other drivers operating their vehicle in a reckless and dangerous manner, please try to get their plate number and report the matter to the police.  Your child may be the next victim.

Very concerned citizen
