The current exhibition “New Photography” at the Devonish Gallery, showing photographs taken by Heather Guess ofNew York, has been extended to April 10.
The 32 exhibits are photographs of varying sizes mounted on board and framed. They were all taken inAnguillaand include sail boats, birds, goats, roosters, lizards, churches, beaches and the sea. Some are in colour but many are in sepia tones. She produces the photographs using a digital camera and a digital negative, and develops them in a ‘Light Room’. She has a very large commercial type printer that can reproduce on vellon, rice paper, water colour paper or even metal. However, for the tropical climate ofAnguillashe has her photos on board as she says they will stand up to the climate well.
Courtney Devonish, owner of Devonish Gallery, says of her work: “I think the work Heather has done has introduced to Anguillians an appreciation for their own surroundings. I think it’s an interesting look at the island from a different perspective, and I hope Anguillians will come out and enjoy the show.”
Heather says that she likes photography because she can make the world pause for brief moments. “I hope my work provides a new lens for Anguillians to see themselves. I like to think as though I’m holding up a mirror and showing them their beautiful reflection that they never noticed,’ she said.
