The Anguilla Chamber of Commerce and Industry has contributed US$3,000 towards a scholarship fund set up by theAnguillaCommunity Collegefor a deserving student to pursue an Associates Degree in Business Administration there.
President of the Chamber,KeithleyLake, said the money was part of proceeds from its first fund-raising function called “Starry Night and Silent Auction” which was held last November at CuisinArt Golf Resort and Spa Club House.
Mr. Lake said the aim of the Chamber was to support the efforts of the Community College to build a betterAnguillaby expanding and facilitating the educational and training opportunities available to all Anguillians.
“TheAnguillaCommunity Collegeand Chamber of Commerce, specifically through the efforts of its Executive Director, Wilma Broaden, sought to develop a partnership with theAnguillaCommunity Collegewith the aim of bringing the resources of the College within the reach of our membership and theAnguillacommunity at large,” Mr. Lake stated. “Those efforts culminated in the signing of an MOU between theAnguillaCommunity Collegeand the Chamber of Commerce on November 9, 2010. The MOU formalised the intention of both parties to work collaboratively towards enhancing the education, training and capacity of all Anguillians and, in particular, the business community. As a result, the Chamber established a scholarship fund drive as well as its ongoing activities.”
Chairperson of the Board of Governors of the College, Rhona Richardson-Roydon, said she and her colleagues were overjoyed by the donation. “This will enable a school leaver to obtain an Associates Degree right here inAnguilla. That is unheard of for us, and we are excited about it,” she commented. “We are certain that on successful completion of this Associates Degree, it will allow a worthy Anguillian to go straight into one of the universities or colleges with links to theAnguillaCommunity College.” She thanked the Board and Staff of the Chamber for their hard work.
Professor Delroy Louden was particularly grateful to the Chamber, saying that the partnership with the Community College sent a clear message to the business establishments to become involved in the College and nation-building. He stressed that such involvement was necessary for the growth and development of the island. He said the publicity of the Chamber’s donation was an encouragement to students that the College, with the support of the business organisation, would raise the additional funding needed to educate them.
