ANGLEC’S GM: “High Electricity Price Due To High Price Of Fuel

ANGLEC’s General Manager, Thomas Hodge, says the cost of electricity can be burdensome for many customers who are in fact complaining about the high rates.
He made the statement on Monday this week, while handing over a solar panel system to the Health Authority to reduce the cost of electricity at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. It is a pilot project which, in time, can lead to consumers in Anguilla taking advantage of opportunities to use renewable energy (both from the sun and wind) to reduce their electricity bills.

“Being at the frontline of the issue, we understand what our customers are going through,” Mr. Hodge said. “Because of the price of electricity, I seethat the customer is struggling to stay connected from month to month. I see a lot of businesses operating on the brink of failure and their highest operational expense is electricity.

“The price of electricity is high, and it is high because the price of fuel is high. So what can we do now? We can’t fight oil prices, but that doesn’t mean that we should be left to the mercy of global oil prices. We can actually start by focusing our efforts in directions that can produce meaningful change.”
Mr. Hodge said ANGLEC was playing a leading role to ensure that equipment was available in Anguilla that would allow consumers to see a reduction in their electricity bill by using the resources [sun and wind] “that are showering down on us everyday.”

He added: “We are working with the Government, and the Ministry of Infrastructure, to ensure that the legislative changes are done to make this possible. We don’t have to wage a war against fuel prices. Many great nations have tried that, and we all know that the price of electricity, fuel and energy, keeps going up and up. What do we do? We research, adapt and then come back twice as strong. We have to know that in that process there will be hardships.”
