The Editor The Anguilian Dear Sir:A small but committed number of hospitality industry partners attended a meeting on Tuesday this week to discuss the proposed 10% tax at which Chief Minister Hubert Hughes spoke. |
When asked by Joash Proctor from Sandbar Restaurant if he was coming to the point anytime soon, Mr. Hughes suggested that he was rude.Joash then walked out to which Mr. Hughes said that he “should continue to support young criminals” on Anguilla. This is quite a wild and unjust accusation for the Chief Minister to make against a man who operates one of the most popular restaurants on the island. This was the same CM who allegedly advised the youth of Blowing Point a few years ago to “fight back against the police”. Let’s look at Hubert’s apparent confusion regarding the Anguilla Revolution. On one hand he is praising the revolution and suggesting it may be time for another. At the same time he is saying he mentored at the feet of the greatest politician the world has ever seen, Robert Bradshaw, who threatened to turn Anguilla into a desert, and was the cause of the revolution. Surely, this was an affront to every Anguillian present or not at the tourism meeting. When asked what alternative measures the government was considering to raise money, particularly if the 10% were not levied, Mr. Hughes answered: “I will not answer the question because I do not care about the question”. Is he unaware that in no way is this an acceptable answer and that he gets paid to not only care, but has chosen himself to be responsible for the answers to that very kind of question.
