| Kieron ‘Speedy’ Rogers has much to be proud of as he made a superb performance on the international stage in Daegu, South Korea, for the 13th IAAF World Championships in athletics. The 22 year-old clocked a new national senior record and personal best of 10.55 to finish second in heat 1 of the Men’s 100m qualification. This booked him a place in the first round of the 100m later that evening, where he was unable to improve, stopping the clock at 10.96. |
| During a post-race interview, with trackalerts.com, Rogers said: “I didn’t get much races this year. This is only my third race, so I think I am going good so far.” Rogers has certainly improved his performance over the past year as he ran 11.28 in Miramar, Florida, which he followed with a 10.81 in New Dehli, India, prior to his showing here in Daegu. The former Anguillian 100m record of 10.64 was held by Trevor ‘Ras Bucket’ Davis which was set some 21 years ago in Croydon, England. Also representing Anguilla in Daegu was Shinelle Proctor who competed in the Women’s 100m dash. She ran a personal best of 12.89 ranking her 22nd of the 36 athletes in the preliminary round where the top 19 competitors advanced to the following round. Anguilla’s Shara Proctor who is now competing for Great Britain experienced difficulties with her approach in the Women’s Long Jump qualifications. She fouled her first two attempts before making somewhat a conservative third jump of 6.34m, a distance far short of her 6.81 personal best, and as a result she was unable to advance to the final round. In more athletics news Anguilla, was represented for the first time at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China, by Dee-Ann Rogers and Denvil Ruan. Dee-Ann who competed in the Women’s 400m ran a life time best of 58.95 seconds eclipsing her previous best of 59.16. Dee-Ann, who is only 18 years old, is already a decorated local athlete and is the reigning 2011 ALHCS Sports Day Victrix. She now has her sights on Anguilla’s 400m national record of 57.75 which was set by Shyrone Hughes in 1999. Denvil Ruan, on the other hand, had a reasonable performance in the Men’s Triple jump where he leapt to a mark of 14.38m, a distance much behind his personal best and national record of 14.64m that he set earlier this year in Baltimore, USA. Denvil is currently a Junior at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and a member of their Hawks track & field team. |
