| A source of encouragement, money and satisfaction for farmers in Anguilla is when they can find a ready market for their produce. This was the experience of Hensley and Rosalind Hodge of Long Bay, when they showcased a harvest of large pumpkins at Syd& Pete Supermarket at George Hill on Tuesday this week. |
About half-an-hour prior to visiting the supermarket, Mrs. Hodge was at The Anguillian where she showed the produce which she and her husband harvested that day in their backyard garden. Some of the pumpkins were the largest grown in Anguilla in recent times, and appeared to have been reaped from plants which benefited greatly from the constant rainfall over the past few months and a rich supporting soil. One pumpkin weighed 65 pounds. Hensley and Rosaline find much pleasure in backyard gardening, especially in these times of financial and economic difficulty. They usually grow papayas, corn, peas, potatoes, plantains and tomatoes; but with their success at pumpkins, growing this popular vegetable and cash crop is a good addition. |
