Under the theme “Stay Healthy, Keep Fit”, Julucans teamed up to eat healthier, move more and shed extra pounds. The competition was launched by the Health and Wellness Committee at one of the Resort’s Health Fairs in May and included nutritional guidance and motivational sessions with local health and fitness professionals like Louis Price, Leroy Browne, Cardigan Connor, members of the Anguilla Diabetes Association and the Health Authority of Anguilla. There were weekly weigh-ins and a number of the participants used the “buddy system” to motivate each other. The Guest Services Team created a special walking group, while several Food and Beverage and other employees took advantage of a special corporate rate for gym membership and personal training sessions at the JC Recreational Centre and other fitness facilities. The competition which included weekly Winners, generated much excitement at the property, motivating even those who were not in the competition to engage in healthier lifestyle activities. Darren Moses, who emerged overall winner, lost over 15% of his start weight. His prizes included gym membership, a trip for two to Puerto Rico and a certificate of accomplishment. Elicia Webster and Nicola Richardson-Roberts, who each lost 11.5% of their body weight, tied for second place. Their prizes included a two-night stay at Sonesta Great Bay Beach Resort & Casino. Third place winner, Jessica Hodge, who lost 10% of her weight, was awarded a two-night stay at Oyster Bay Resort in St. Maarten. Other weekly winners included Joseph Hodge and Sheila Harrigan-Davis and the other top 15 “Biggest Losers” included Eve Mussington, Priscilla Gumbs, Curlita Richardson, Joslyn Snagg, Eltima Gumbs, Sharon Brooks, Kishma Hodge, Jennifer Edwards, Tanassia Thomas, Patson Williams and Ricky Richardson. The participants were recognised and presented with their prizes and awards at the Resort’s July Employee Awards Luncheon. | Darren Moses, winner |
The Juluca “Biggest Loser” challenge, led by Committee Chairperson, Annmarie Letang, became a catalyst for increasing awareness and creating a workplace community that supports healthier behaviours relating to physical activity and nutrition at Cap Juluca, with many of the participants continuing the healthy lifestyles and weekly weigh-ins after the competition. “Whilst we are elated with the success of the programme, we are particularly pleased that the competition has resulted in lifestyle changes,” says Director of Human Resources, Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks. The Juluca Health and Wellness Committee is acutely aware of the challenges that obesity, diabetes, hypertension and other lifestyle diseases pose to our societies and the aim is to help Julucans take conscious steps to improve their overall health and fitness. |
