Acting Attorney General in Anguilla, Mr. Ivor Greene, has outlined some the agenda matters on which the Chambers of the Public Bar is engaged.
He was at the time delivering an address to the Appeal Court offering congratulations to Chief Justice, Janice Pereira, and Appeal Judges, Justices Louise Blenman and Mario Michel, and High Court Judge, Cheryl Mathurin on their appointments.
With respect to the agenda of the Attorney General’s Chambers, Mr. Greene had this to say:
“We are paying much attention to the pilot programmes established by the Court particularly the Family Court and the Commercial Court. We are excited by these developments and look forward to their lessons being applied to Anguilla as our domestic administration of legal justice develops.
“We are also looking forward to the implementation stage of the Family Law Reform project currently being undertaken. The family is the foundation of a society and the laws that govern it greatly shape and mould the family as an institution. Many of the current laws reflect the mores and interests of the 19th century ruling classes and very often don’t serve the needs of today’s families in the Caribbean. This project therefore goes to the very foundation of Caribbean society itself.
“In terms of forthcoming legal developments in Anguilla, the Attorney General [James Wood], who has asked me to convey his disappointment in being unable to attend today, has told me that he intends to shortly move forward on implementing the Legal Professions Act.”
The Chief Justice was happy to hear about the plans of the Attorney General’s Chambers, particularly regarding the Legal Professions Act.
