On Saturday, June 23rd parents and children gathered at the James Ronald Webster Park for the climax of the Run, Jump, Throw Program. Organized by the Sports Department, the inter-primary school competition hosts all the primary schools and each school team consists of 5 girls and boys who run, jump and throw to collectively score points for their team.
The purpose of the program is to introduce physical activity to the young children where each event provides the basic running, jumping and throwing motor skills they will need for any sport.
Run, Jump, Throw was started by the Sports Department in 2010 and conducted by coaches every Saturday at the Webster’s Park. Since February of this year, the program has been delivered once a week as an afternoon activity in all of the primary schools where the children are trained by IAAF Certified Kiddy Athletics Instructors.
Mrs. Heather Richardson, who oversees the program, stated that Run, Jump, Throw was not affiliated with any particular sporting body and was the initiative of the Sports Department as a developmental program for Anguilla’s children. She was highly appreciative of the fact that the Education Department had granted permission for the children to participate in the program as an afterschool activity, and for allowing them to represent their schools in the final competition.
