Volleyball returns to the Webster Park

The annual National Volleyball Championships got off to a flying start following a brief opening ceremony and words of encouragement from the Deputy Director of Sports, Mr. Rollins Richardson. Four female teams battled for the crown of Female Knock Out Champions. In the end, Spikas, led by Khalidah Banks, Vivian Fleming and company, routed their arch nemesis After Shock with a score of 25, 13 to clinch the crown. Earlier, Spikas easily disposed of new comers Shooting Stars with a score of 25,6. Likewise After Shock made easy work of the explosive Dynamite with a score of 25,11.

The men’s division was filled with excitement as Kumite, Hylanders, Uprising, Police, Spartans and Rising Stars vied for the title of Knock Out Champion. Uprising and Kumite played tense finals as both teams tried to out block and out spike each other. As fortune would have it Kumite outlasted their opponents and won the crown with a score of 25, 22. In the earlier games, Uprising easily side swiped Rising Stars with a score of 25, 15; Kumite brutalized the Spartans with a score of 25, 6. The long arm of the law suffered severely at the hands of Uprising with a score of 25, 8.

On Sunday evening the Shooting Stars provided stout resistance to favourites Spikas. Despite the efforts of Angela, Sandy and company, the Spikas led by the hitting of Ludianne and Farrah thwarted any thoughts of winning. The score for the game was 25, 14; 25, 19 and 25, 7.
The men’s match up was to be a battle of two of the top three teams but, instead, it mirrored an exercise in futility.

Hylanders, the heir apparent to the Anguilla Volleyball throne, were of the view Kumite would be easy pickings. However, Andre “half man, half amazing” Samuels, Jason Liburd and Jelanie Lawrence of Kumite thought otherwise and applied relentless pressure on their opponents as they spiked from all areas of the court. Kumite’s defense was impregnable as hardly any hits touched their side of the court. Despite the best efforts of Sherwin “Skywalker” Richardson to save Hylanders, Kumite delighted in the sweet taste of victory. The scores for the game were 25, 22; 25, 20 and 25, 18 in favour of Kumite.
